However, a transformation takes place the week prior to the first game of the season. At that time, equipment managers and student workers begin the task of placing all the decals and lettering on the helmets to complete the transformation to the helmet we know so well..Around 220 "P" decals will be used for the first application and will be replaced as needed throughout the season. By season's end, the department will typically go through around 350 of the letters. However, it doesnt stop there. There are also stripes, conference logos, text, american flags and face masks that must be put on the helmet to complete the look..Prior to each game, the helmets are inspected and receive touch up paint to repair scratches and decals are replaced as needed to keep the players looking sharp for the fans.
