  • The Boilermaker baseball team celebrates its first Big Ten championship since 1909 in proper dogpile fashion. As the game drew to a close I knew that there would be quite the celebration. Showing faces in a moment like this is key, and I knew that showing the players from behind as they ran out or celebrated would result in an unacceptable photo for me. In planning for the finale, I positioned myself in a spot with a long lens that would afford me the view of the team rushing onto the field to celebrate and give me the best angle.   • Glowing metal flies through the air as a piece of hot metal is hammered into shape on an anvil in a materials engineering laboratory in Neil Armstrong Hall. Despite wearing appropriate protective clothing, this one still caught me by surprise as the metal pieces flew past me and the camera when this photo was taken. When it happened, I knew that the end result would be dramatic. A shutter speed of 1/4 of a second was used to show the red-hot metal as it flew through the air. (Andrew Hancock/Purdue University)

  • Purdue Olympic gold medalist David Boudia poses for a portrait before departing to London for the 2012 Olympics, where he took gold in the 10M platform. This portrait was one of my favorites because I feel it shows David's personality and determination.   • Drew Sayer, a graduate student in nutrition science, gets a precise measurement of his body composition inside the BOD POD. Sayer works with Wayne Campbell, professor of nutrition science, who investigates the health benefits of diet and exercise. This was part of a series for the College of Health and Human Sciences' Life 360 magazine. The magazine prides itself on dramatic and engaging photography.   • A piglet touches snouts with its mother while exploring their pen at Spring Fest. I am a big fan of the emotional connection that this moment makes. It is proof of how strong a mother's bond is with her offspring. (Andrew Hancock/Purdue University)

  • Purdue Memorial Union in black and white infrared. This photo was taken with a digital camera I had physically modified to capture light from the infrared spectrum. The result turns foliage and grass white for a dramatic effect. (Andrew Hancock/Purdue University)

  • Swimmer Lauren Gustafson glides through the pool at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. For this photo, I placed my camera in an underwater housing to give the view of her swim stroke beneath the water.   • Sabre Kais writes formulas on the glass wall of a data center in Lawson Computer Science Building. For this assignment for the College of Science's Insights magazine, we were featuring Kais and his work in quantum chemistry. Kais is a chemistry professor and director of Purdue's National Science Foundation-funded Quantum Information Center for Quantum Chemistry. In the past I had done various things with objects or writing being placed on plexiglass. However, for this shoot, I knew we needed to think bigger to create something different and special. After some brainstorming, a co-worker came up with the shoe polish pen, which worked perfectly for what we needed to illustrate the story. (Andrew Hancock/Purdue University)

  • University Hall is seen on a fall afternoon looking down Hello Walk. This photo was also taken with my modified infrared camera. Instead of removing all the color hues after calibrating white balance, I left them to add an extra dimension to the photograph. (Andrew Hancock/Purdue University)

  • An opponent's pitch is seen frozen in midair while on its way to the waiting Purdue batter. To accomplish this photograph, I manually set my focus to 15 feet in front of the batter and then without shooting in a burst, I would wait and fire one frame as the ball passed through my area of focus. It was one of eight remote cameras I had installed in the catwalk for the game to provide a unique and compelling vantage point not traditionally seen of the sport.
